The Pagans trilogy is violent in places, with a few
swear-words in the first and third volumes. I would suggest it might be
suitable for a mature 14-year-old.
The Penal Colony is
exceedingly violent, although the worst is not so much described as
alluded to. It also deals with homosexual rape and other matters which are
best left to an adult sensibility: the book is not suitable for
children.
Refuge is also intended for adult readers only. It contains
profanity, descriptions of sexual activity and occult worship, and graphic
scenes of extreme violence.
The Tide Mill is very much gentler. There is one
sex scene, sparingly described (Part Two, Chapter 12), which I suggest you
review before letting a child see the book. Otherwise it is entirely
suitable for young people, especially as much of the narrative concerns
characters who are themselves very young and learning to find their way in
the world.
